If originality of thought and performance is the highest goal which can be achieved in jazz, then Sonny Blount a.k.a. Sun Ra is the greatest jazzman ever. Appreciation for his music and ideas will never stop as long as people are still capable of distinguishing rigorous invention from mere playing.
