The estimable Alan Suback, in the liner notes to Gold Sounds, described James Carter as “John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman all rolled into one”. Twelve years on from such hyperbole James is still playing at a level unmatched by any tenor man today. We’re not saying he’s Jesus Christ but his initials are JC.
