Alto saxophone week kicks off with Paul Desmond, who seemingly never played a wrong note in his life. Maybe the most tuneful bopper ever, his sense of humor was dry as hell. He famously said he was the quietest player ever but he turned the jazz world on its head with his childhood friend Dave Brubeck. For our money his best album as leader came on Creed Taylor’s CTI label with Pure Desmond.
