Ornette Coleman started out on tenor in the 1940s but after a gig in Texas he was mugged and his tenor was destroyed. Then he took up alto and changed music forever. Ornette so dramatically disregarded all rules of sound he freed minds to an extent not matched by any other musician. One of the rare players who invented out of whole cloth with little relation to what came before him. In his later years he was friends with BBR visual director Mike Anderson.
