Jackie McLean was an alto player whose sound had a distinctive piercing quality. His career spanned approximately 60 years and was marked by considerable quality in several styles, from bop to modal to funk. His “Dr. Jackyll and Mr. Funk” side from 1979 is a high water mark for jazz funk.
