Bennett Lester “Benny” Carter loved Bubber Miley, who was a trumpeter in Duke Ellington’s band. So, Carter tried to play trumpet like Miley. He couldn’t so he took up the alto sax and proceeded to have one of the most prolific and impressive careers ever on alto. He never stopped playing trumpet though.
