It had to be and it is…Charlie “Yardbird” Parker, the emperor of the alto sax and probably the only man on any sax to rival Coltrane Bird’s technical ability, feel and dedication to his horn-he practiced up to 15 hours a day for years- are the kind of genius which can make even the staunchest atheist believe in God when he was on his game. Packed a ton of living into his 35 years and his recordings can still thrill some 60-70 years after they were made. So concludeth tenor and alto sax and we know there are many players we didn’t mention (Wayne Shorter we’re talking about you among many others). Maybe we’ll get back to them on an a-la-carte basis but tomorrow it’s on to trumpet. Delicious.
