John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie is today’s BBR trumpeter. Possibly the most important player to play the trumpet. He was born in Cherow, South Carolina and helped Bird and Monk invent bebop. He was also a consummate, unselfish showman, all cheeks and lightning-fast invention. Introduced a 16 year old Lee Morgan to the world. We’d need volumes of heavy books to touch on just the most valuable of his contributions so just go listen to his records. If they ever make a Mt. Rushmore for jazz, his face will be on it.
