As tenor week HAD to end with Trane and alto week HAD to end with Bird, trumpet week HAS to end with Miles. Like his band mates Trane and Bird, he towers above others on his instrument. Unlike them or anyone else he’s as famous for what he didn’t play as what he played. His use of silence and space was not just musically innovative, it presaged and highlighted the oh-so-tough to follow adage: less is more. A true genius. Tomorrow it’s on to piano.
