William James “Count” Basie didn’t invent the big band but he made it the most important configuration in jazz when he worked in his. Not to mention “discovering” Lester Young, Billie Holiday and many others.  But none of that is what he’s featured here for today. Today the BBR piano spotlight falls on the Count, whose playing looked and sounded like the instrument grew out of his body.
