Bass week rumbles on with Scott LaFaro, whose use of counter melodies and obsessive practice made him the bassists’ bassist in the 50s. Scott was born and raised in the Finger Lakes region of New York. He died there too, in a car accident in 1961. In between he went to LA to launch his career, playing with Tjader and other West Coast jazz luminaries. It was as the bassist in Bill Evans’ trio that Scott earned his greatest fame, but we learned about him in a sterling posthumous release called Pieces of Jade. Comgratulations Scott and welcome to BBR bass week.
