Drummer week at BBR fills and crackles with today’s entry of Jack DeJohnette. Jack hails from Chicago and started his musical career as a pianist. He replaced Tony Williams in Miles’ second great quintet and played with an astounding number of big names, including Charles Lloyd, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, John Abercrombie, Alice Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock and John Scofield. He got to the hearts of BBR by teaching us about our label forebear ECM and his decades long association with Jarrett in particular is a relationship to be envied. Jack’s style is so next level it resists categorization but there have been innumerable times we’ve listened to a particularly moving album, looked up the drummer and it was Jack. Congratulations Jack on this well-earned honor.
