He was an innovator in freeing drummers from strictly time keeping duties and finds spots in songs to play which are usually unexpected but still sound spot on. For the last few decades he has played a lot with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano and his long association with ECM has produced one of the more impressive drummer-leader catalogs.
