New Orleans’ own Herlin Riley is today’s featured drummer in BBR drummer week. Herlin inspired the creation of our label at a 2002 show at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. That night he was paired with Reginald Veal on bass and the two of them made the night jump and swing behind a bevy of all-star musicians from Wynton Marsalis to Eric Clapton to Ray Charles. When we investigated Herlin’s history we found he was the reigning king of second line drumming who did that cliched great drummer thing: he made everything he played on better. But Herlin did more: he made it funkier and surrounded the groove. He’s also a heckuva nice guy with a couple of sterling leader turns on the Criss Cross and Maxjazz labels. Congrats Herlin, you are where you belong, firmly entrenched in BBR drummer week where you belong. Now if we can only get you on BBR wax….
