For a lot of music fans who grew up in the 90s Chris Cornell and Soundgarden were the cooler alternative to Nirvana and Pearl Jam, who were pretty cool themselves. It was like saying George Harrison was your favorite Beatle or favoring Albert Ayler over Coltrane. There was an element of contrariness in Cornell and that obscured his greatness in the way that it’s just off-puttingly egotistical to know you’re great. Cobain knew he was great. Cornell may have known he was great but he never let anyone see it. Which in a way makes his suicide the most tragic of all. Now Mailman, always our favorite Soundgarden song, seems even heavier. Enjoy.
