BBR bass week spotlight shines today on Oscar Pettiford. A Native American from the Chocktaw tribe in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Oscar moved to NY where he jammed with Dizzy and Monk at Minton’s in Harlem and helped invent be-bop. His Prestige lp Winner’s Circle which featured ‘Trane is highly recommended. Oh, he also discovered Cannonball Adderley when one of his musicians tricked him into letting the then-unknown music teacher take a solo in Pettiford’s band. Congrats Oscar, you made it.
