Phil Woods was so closely associated with Charlie Parker he not only sounded like Bird he married his widow. And stayed married to her a helluva lot longer than Bird. As for Woods’ playing, it was sublime…liquid, inventive and diamond hard. He was born in Massachusetts and learned from piano master Lennie Tristano before touring with Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie and Quincy Jones. One of the GIANTs of the alto.
