Brooklyn’s own Kenny Kirkland is today’s featured piano player in BBR’s piano week. Kenny came to our attention with his unique touch on ECM’s Miroslav Vitous lps. His sound on the keyboard was unlike anything else recorded in the 1980s. Later, when we were figuring out the hard won genius of Wynton Marsalis’ early recordings there was Kenny again, seeming to probe our brains with his magic fingers hitting ordinary keys. Kenny died at 33 before he had a chance to make his mark as a leader but his sideman stuff shines so brightly he is our least known, but still deserving piano week spotlight. Tragic posthumous congrats Kenny.
